BWA Plant Tour Focus Groups are focused on continuous improvement and the reduction and elimination of waste in our manufacturing processes. You need to be a member of the BWA to attend the Plant Tour Focus Groups.

Event Format: BWA Plant Tour Focus Groups are focused on continuous improvement and the reduction and elimination of waste in our manufacturing processes. Hosts provide an overview of their business, best practices, followed by the presentation of a challenge or problem to the group they are trying to solve or improve. This is followed by a tour and a focus in the area in question. The group then debriefs with facilitated discussion on suggestions for the host to help solve their problem and reduce waste in their processes. Themes of Lean Manufacturing principles are referenced and benchmarked in informal discussion and information sharing.

  • George Guenzler & Sons (http://www.guenzler.com) is well known in the industry as a manufacturer and supplier of quality custom wood components, working with customers in the Contract, Institutional, Healthcare, Hospitality, Kitchen Cabinet, Millwork, Office, Residential and Stair building industries. Their 70,000 square foot facility houses the latest in manufacturing technology; CNC routers, linear shapers, cutting equipment, drilling machines, turning and carving machines, resulting in faster deliveries and superior quality products.
  • Their Lean Manufacturing focused on Continuous Improvement enables them to produce smaller orders with shorter lead times allowing customers to reduce costs and improve their own performance.

George Guenzler & Sons Challenge:

1. Reinstating 6S Program: Guenzler would like to have the BWA members team observe and evaluate their 5S (6S) audit program. 6S is a variation of Toyota’s 5S program, with the 6th S representing Safety. 5S (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5S_(methodology) ) is a Toyota discipline that leads operations to efficiencies and consistencies in processes and product. In order to adopt 5S, it requires an auditing process and monitoring system to support the discipline of Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain, and Safety being the 6th S. Not only will members learn more about it on this tour, but you will also be able to provide your feedback on what you observe, and take lessons back to be able to begin and improve 5S in your own plants!

2. Reinvigorate Continuous Improvement within the plant:
Continuous Improvement is a mindset, and a culture. It is a way of doing things everyday, by all of your people. Guenzeler has had a Continuous Improvement program for many years, They wish to share their Continuous Improvement program, and solicit feedback and ideas from members to invigorate it and make it better; take it to the next level!

Brad Cairns and Sepp Gmeiner will be present at this event! These are common challenges for many BWA Manufacturers! Plan to come and learn from this focus group and share your challenges and insights! Bring your production people and get them engaged in change!
